What is MUN?
Model United Nations is a simulation of the actual United
Nations. Students discuss current world issues, including
human rights, refugees, crime prevention, drug trafficking, and
economic development. In a Model United Nations confer-
ence, each student takes on the role of a United Nations
ambassador from a different country and debates various topics
as a UN representative of that country. The conference is usu-
ally set in various committees depending on the number of par-
ticipants.
The Model UN is
a fun-filled activ-
ity in which stu-
dents meet peers
from different
cultures and
backgrounds and
have a chance to
share ideas. The
skills the stu-
dents develop in
Model UN
include public
speaking, writ-
ing, researching,
negotiating,
diplomacy, con-
sensus building,
conflict resolu-
tion, and toler-
ance.
IC and MUN
It is clearly stated
in its mission
statement that
International
College programs
aim to develop
personal qualities and skills leading to effective communica-
tion, creative expression, intellectual curiosity, critical thinking,
self-discipline and self-confidence.
It was clear to the school’s administration that having an MUN
club at IC would be an asset to the school, especially as the
program’s objectives clearly align with those of the school.
In 2003, IC’s MUN journey started. Fifteen secondary school
students joined the club that year and participated and per-
formed very well in the Amman Model United Nations confer-
ence. After this successful experience, the MUN club became
one of the most popular clubs at IC and now requires auditions
to maintain a manageable number of participants.
In 2004, two delegations, consisting of fifteen secondary school
students each, under the supervision of Miss Natalia Linos,
MUN club advisor, Mrs. Rindala Abdel Baki, community serv-
ice supervisor, and Mr. Hussein Said, secondary school assis-
tant director, represented IC at the YALE Model United Nations
conference, in USA, and the St. Petersburg Model United
Nations conference, in Russia. Both delegations performed
extremely well at the conferences; they were positively recog-
nized and they won many prizes.
In 2005, two delegations, consisting of fifteen students each
under the supervision of Miss Natalia Linos, and Mr. Shaun
Henriksen, MUN club advisors, and Mr. Riad Chirazi, activities
coordinator and chaperone, represented IC in the YALE Model
United Nations conference, in the USA and the Beijing Model
United Nations conference, in China. IC’s delegations distin-
guished themselves and won many prizes at both conferences.
During their stay in the USA in 2004 and 2005, our students
had the chance to visit some of the best universities, including
Harvard, MIT and Yale.
In 2006, three delegations, the first one consisting of 15 sec-
ondary school students and under the supervision of Mr. Paul
Aston, English Instructor and MUN club advisor, and Mrs.
Hanan El Shawwaf, chairperson of the English department and
chaperone, participated in the Georgetown MUN held in El
Doha,Qatar. In this conference our students came away with
13 awards.
The second delegation, consisting of nine students and under
the supervision of Miss Lisa Griswold, foreign universities
counselor and MUN club advisor, and Mr. Riad Chirazi, activi-
ties coordinator and chaperone, participated in the Genoa
Model United
Nations
Conference held
in Italy. In this
conference our
students passed
two resolutions.
A third delega-
tion, consisting
of fourteen stu-
dents and under
the supervision
of Mr. Chirazi,
activities and
CAS Coordinator
and MUN club
advisor, and
Miss Wadiaa
Khoury, commu-
nity service
supervisor and
chaperone, par-
ticipated in the
LAU Model
United Nations
conference held
in Beirut,
Lebanon. In this conference, our students received six awards
including Best Delegation award.
