Two hundred and eighteen students
graduated on June 12 – many with
honors and all with flying colors. The
ceremony was held in the Assembly
Hall at the American University of
Beirut.
There was a lot of advice for the
graduates before they walk out into the
‘real world’.
“Don’t judge others harshly,” said IC
president John Johnson in his Opening
Address, “and try to be accepting of the
shortfalls of others.”
Their middle school director had her
own advice:
“As you move on through your univer-
sity years, and later through your careers,”
said Wadad Hoss in her Faculty Address,
“remember that the most important thing is to build good
habits, both of the mind and of the heart because these
are your true treasures and your real safety valves.”
Taking the stand, guest speaker Jean Said Makdisi
heartily congratulated all the students and especially ones
who did not make the honor list.
“I want to address not just those who did very well, but
also to the students who were not first, second or third.
Those who just did ok,” she said in her Commencement
Address. “As time passes you will find that being or not
being first will become less important and making your
own contribu-
tions to society in whatever
career and in whatever way each of you chooses.”
In return, graduates had their words of gratitude.
“This confidence that you instilled in us (by teachers
and parents) will stay with us,” said Jad Hashem in his
Graduates Address and who graduated with high distinc-
tion. “We will prove to you that we deserved it. We will
take the IC spirit, this mixture of self esteem and dyna-
mism and respect for others, with us wherever we go.”
The awards(IC Scholars, Stephen Penrose, Basil Fulei-
han, MacLachlan) Awards were then presented by Senior
Vice-President Mishka Mourani who later joined the
president in presenting the diplomas.

The IC Alumni Association and
the Alumni Office welcomed its
newest members when the 2007
graduates gathered at the Mar-
tin House garden last July. The
alumni were decorated with pins
(stating their year of graduation)
and were officially admitted into
the Association.
