Obituary
A
rthur Lachlan Reed never wa-
vered in his loyalty to IC. The
grandson of IC’s founder, Al-
exander Maclachlan, Mr Reed served as
Board Member from 1965 until 2002.
He then became Trustee Emeritus and
often travelled to Beirut to take part in
founder’s day.
Mr Reed was born in Smyrna, Turkey
in 1917. His grandparents, Alexander
and Rose MacLachlan, had opened a
school for boys 26 years earlier in their
small rented home. By 1902, it became
known as the International College and
produced such highly capable graduates
that European and American universities
admitted them without entrance exams.
This is the ‘education world’ that Lachlan
Reed was born into.
Mr Reed continued his secondary and
post-graduate education in the United
States. He graduated from Yale Univer-
sity and was named Yale’s Mellon Fellow
to Clare College in Cambridge, England.
He served as a Navy lieutenant com-
mander in WWII including four years
of service with the chief of Naval Opera-
tions and two years with US ambassador
to England.
He worked as a manager for Honey-
well and taught English at his old alma
mater, Andover Preparatory school. He
was also the headmaster of Northrop
Collegiate School in Minneapolis.
He later founded three computer sci-
ence technology firms. One of them was
called International Timesharing and
later sold to Sprint.
He also founded three schools: Out-
ward Bound School in Minnesota, Victo-
ria College in London and Dynamy Inc.
in Worcester, Mass.
He was a co-founder of InnerCity Ten-
nis which helps youth build character.
In 1942, he married to Martha Sweatt
who died after a 63 year marriage. The
Reeds had six children: Harold, Bill, Lach,
Ian, Mark, and Aida (Luce) (Ian and Aida
are currently on the Board of Trustees.)
Mr Reed was a trustee of the Harold W.
Sweatt Foundation, American University
of Cairo, IC, Fisk University in Nashville,
William Smith College in Geneva, NY
and the InnerCity Tennis Foundation. He
was Trustee Emeritus of the Mark Bristol
American Hospital in Istanbul.
In 2004, IC Board Chairman, William
Turner, presented him with a certificate
and the IC medal with the inscription:
“In recognition of his inspired leader-
ship, enthusiastic support, and decades of
devoted service to International College,
the Board of Trustees gratefully presents
the IC medal of honor to Lachlan Reed.”
Arthur Lachlan Reed passed away
on Thursday November 8, 2007 at
his home after a brief illness.
IC faculty and staff send their
deepest condolences to the Reed
family. IC will greatly miss him.
“The Trustees of
International College
express their gratitude
to, and their unabiding
esteem and affection
for Lach Reed whom
we and future Trustees
will forever be proud to
call Mr. International
College”.
"I had the pleasure of knowing
Lach for over thirty years as co-trustees.
Of course, the Reed family and IC
are almost one in the same and Lach
personified all that IC represented.
His support both financially and with
great wisdom is unmatched in IC history.
Lach's love of the institution and the
Middle East served us in so many ways.
He will be sorely missed by every member
of the IC family. Fortunately for the
institution the family continues to be
represented by his son, Ian, and daughter,
Aida. All of us at IC will hold his memory
in the highest regard forever."
